Sun Bear

Sun Bear - Helarctos malayanus

Sun bears are a keystone species (meaning extremely important) to the survival of forests in Southeast Asia and a true sustainability hero. The role of these unique and loveable bears helps the rainforest and other species within in it to thrive.

Sun bears eat fruits and plants that means that they can disperse the seeds across the rainforest, allowing it to grow.
When digging around for insects with their sharp claws, Sun Bears can churn up the soil allowing nutrients to mix and making the soil more fertile.
Sun bears love honey! With this taste for honey, they claw bee nests from high up in trees, this then makes holes that can be used as nesting sites for other species, such as hornbills.

Made out of an eco-fibreglass alternative made with recycled waste from around the zoo this lifelike Sun Bear sculpture emulates how this incredible species uses sustainability in the wild to make their lives more efficient.
