This year’s Pumpkin Valley event at Hertfordshire Zoo was a smashing success, garnering rave reviews from our visitors. Featuring over 3000 pumpkins and six unique photo opportunities, the event provided families with a festive and memorable experience.
As a special treat on the final day, visitors were given the chance to take home pumpkins, spreading the joy of the season right into their homes. But what happened to the remaining pumpkins? Sustainability is a core value at our zoo, and we made sure theseseasonal delights did not go to waste.
We partnered with Equigrow, a company specialising in turning green waste into valuable organic green compost. The process is meticulous and eco-friendly; collected green vegetation is shredded, placed into windrows, and regularly turned to ensure proper aeration, speeding up the decomposition process. After about 7 to 8 weeks, the material is finely screened to produce high-quality compost, ready for enhancing soil health in gardens and farms.
Special thanks go to GP Garden Services, who played a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable disposal of the remaining pumpkins. Their dedication and expertise were indispensable in facilitating this green initiative.
By transforming leftover pumpkins into compost, we not only reduce waste but also contribute to a cycle of sustainability that supports local agriculture and green spaces. We’re proud to provide an entertaining yet environmentally responsible experience for all our visitors at Hertfordshire Zoo.
