Hertfordshire Zoo’s brand-new Lions of India habitat is officially open! Designed to transport guests into the natural home of the endangered Asiatic lion, this immersive space is packed with wildlife wonders, educational experiences, and interactive photo opportunities. Here are the top 5 things you won’t want to miss:
The stars of the new habitat are Sonika and Sahee, our incredible pair of Asiatic lions, one of the rarest big cat species in the world. Get up close with these majestic animals as they explore their new, spacious environment designed to replicate the dry forest landscape of India’s Gir region.
Climb aboard our colourful Indian tuk tuk, perfectly parked by the habitat for a unique photo moment! This vibrant three-wheeler is bursting with character and makes for a brilliant memory of your day at Lions of India. Strike a pose and feel like you’re on safari through the streets of Gujarat.
Join one of our brand-new daily educational talks this Easter, where our expert keepers will share fascinating facts about lion conservation, their behaviours, and what makes Sonika and Sahee so special.
Just beside the main viewing area, step inside the Ranger Lookout and discover a world of smaller, but no less captivating, creatures. From the mysterious red devil vampire crabs to vibrant emerald tree skinks, a rare big-headed turtle, and fiery fire-bellied toads, there’s a whole host of reptiles and amphibians to discover, with even more surprises waiting.
As you wander through the habitat, keep an eye out for interactive educational displays, fun lion facts, and themed photo ops that bring the story of the Asiatic lion to life. Whether you’re a young explorer or a lifelong animal lover, there’s something to learn and enjoy around every corner.
