The New Gloucestershire Old Spot Pig!

27 February 2026

Visit Hertfordshire Zoo today and meet Countess!

Looking for a fun, educational, family‑friendly day out? Come and say hello to Countess, our beautiful new Gloucestershire Old Spot pig! She’s already winning hearts with her gentle nature, charming personality and unmistakable white coat with black spots.

Who is Countess?

Countess is a traditional rare breed Gloucestershire Old Spot, known for their adorable floppy ears and friendly temperament. These pigs originated in rural Gloucestershire, where they grazed through orchards, snacking on windfall apples—a fun fact the kids will love!

The breed is listed as “At Risk” in the UK, so visiting Countess is also a great way for families to learn about conservation and rare farm animals in a hands‑on, memorable way.

Perfect for a Family Day Out

If you’re planning a weekend adventure or a school holiday activity, Countess is a must‑see! Families love her because:

  • She’s friendly, calm and great for children to observe
  • Her distinctive spots make her instantly recognisable
  • She helps kids learn about rare breeds and British farming heritage
  • She’s part of our ever‑growing family of amazing animals

Plus, our team managed to capture some lovely photos of Countess on arrival, so she’s already a star!

Fun Facts to Share With the Kids

  • Old Spots are famous for their super-sensitive sense of smell
  • Their floppy ears often fall right over their eyes
  • They’ve been farmyard favourites for generations, thanks to their sweet nature

Countess is waiting to meet you at Hertfordshire Zoo! Whether you’re a local family or visiting for the day, she’s guaranteed to be a highlight of your trip.
