Introducing Lions of India!

Hertfordshire Zoo is roaring with excitement as it welcomes two incredibly rare Asiatic lions, Sonika and Sahee, to their brand-new home, “Lions of India.” This monumental arrival marks the first time these majestic big cats have set paw in Hertfordshire, adding a new chapter to the zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation and education.

A Journey from The Big Cat Sanctuary, Kent

Sonika and Sahee will make their journey to Hertfordshire Zoo from The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, a world-renowned facility dedicated to the conservation of wild cats. The sanctuary plays a vital role in breeding, education, and conservation efforts for endangered species, making it the perfect partner for Hertfordshire Zoo’s ambitious new exhibit.

A Habitat Like No Other

The newly renovated “Lions of India” habitat has been meticulously crafted to reflect the natural habitat of these lions, native to the Gir Forest of India. Unlike their African cousins, Asiatic lions thrive in environments featuring a blend of woodland, scrubland, and rocky outcrops, with hot summers and mild winters. With only around 700 of these incredible animals left in the wild, they are a funtimental part of the breeding programme for their species.

To ensure Sonika and Sahee feel at home, the habitat features elevated lookout spots, dense foliage, and cozy, sheltered areas for them to retreat to. Additional heaters have been thoughtfully installed to keep the lions comfortable during the cooler British months. Adding a touch of whimsy and cultural homage, colourful TukTuks are also part of their habitat, offering an engaging and enriched environment.

A Safe and Smooth Transition

James Cork, Head Keeper at Hertfordshire Zoo, shared his enthusiasm:
“Sonika and Sahee will be arriving at Hertfordshire Zoo from The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. They will have time to adapt to their new surroundings so are ready to welcome visitors. Their arrival is a testament to the team’s dedication to conservation, and I encourage all to come and learn about these majestic and endangered big cats.”
