Lynn Takes on Epic Thames Kayak Challenge

15 August 2025

Hertfordshire Zoo and The Big Cat Sanctuary are proud to share that our CEO, Lynn Whitnall, is embarking on another extraordinary sporting challenge — this time trading running shoes for a kayak paddle — to raise vital funds for The Big Cat Sanctuary during its 25th Anniversary year.

On Saturday 23rd August 2025, Lynn will join the Thames 200 Ultra challenge, paddling 125 miles along the iconic River Thames from Lechlade in the Cotswolds all the way to Teddington Lock in London.

This incredible feat will take her and her teammates through the night, navigating 44 locks, passing historic landmarks including Windsor Castle and the royal towpaths, and swapping between two teams of paddlers to keep moving without stopping. Those not in the kayak will be driving ahead to meet the crew at each lock — making this a true test of stamina, teamwork, and determination.

Why Lynn is Taking on the Challenge

2025 marks a milestone for The Big Cat Sanctuary (BCS) as we celebrate 25 years of big cat care, conservation, and education. Over the years, BCS has been at the forefront of:

  • Providing a safe haven for endangered cats in our care, including rescue lions from Ukraine 🦁
  • Running a Cheetah Breeding Centre to support global conservation efforts 🐆
  • Partnering with wildlife organisations around the world to protect threatened species in their natural habitats 🌍

Lynn’s goal is to raise £25,000 — £1,000 for every year of BCS’s work — to support these vital projects and ensure we can continue making a difference for decades to come.

About the Thames 200 Ultra

The Thames 200 Ultra is one of the UK’s most challenging kayak endurance events. Starting in the picturesque market town of Lechlade, participants follow the Thames past Oxford, Henley, and Windsor, finishing in the capital. The course covers 125 miles of waterway and requires paddlers to carry their craft around 44 locks along the route — a punishing mix of paddling and portaging that tests both mental and physical resilience.
