Hertfordshire Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its cherished Eurasian wolves, Romulus and Inge. The siblings, who arrived at the zoo at only a couple of weeks old in
2012, became iconic figures, playing pivotal roles in educating visitors about the wolves in the wild.
Inge, a much-loved member of the zoo family, was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant growth on her leg. Following thorough evaluation by the zoo’s dedicated veterinary specialists, the difficult decision was made to ensure her peaceful passing during a routine vet check, prior to her scheduled relocation to Wolf Watch UK. Inge’s presence at the zoo, spanning over a decade, left an indelible mark on both staff and visitors, who deeply treasured her.
Romulus, Inge’s brother, also became a significant ambassador for his species during his time at Hertfordshire Zoo. After careful monitoring of age-related health concerns, the zoo’s expert team and veterinarians made the compassionate choice to peacefully euthanize him at the age of 12.
Both wolves were profoundly loved by the zoo team and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing them. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the importance of wolf conservation.
Hertfordshire Zoo extends its sincere gratitude to the tireless efforts of its specialized veterinary team, who provided unwavering care and dedication during this challenging time. Furthermore, the zoo expresses heartfelt appreciation to its loyal and generous adopters. Their invaluable support has been crucial in enabling the zoo to provide exceptional care to the wolves and contribute to global wolf conservation initiatives.
