Hertfordshire Zoo says goodbye to Temuko and Tamara

16 January 2026

We wanted to share an important update regarding our much-loved lowland tapirs, Temuko and his daughter Tamara.

After many wonderful years at Hertfordshire Zoo, Temuko and Tamara will soon be moving to another UK zoo collection. This marks the end of a truly special chapter in the zoo’s history.

Temuko has been part of the Hertfordshire Zoo family for an incredible 23 years. His daughter Tamara was born here and is now 13 years old. As father and daughter, they have spent their entire lives together, with Tamara being the last tapir calf born at the zoo.

Tapirs have played a significant role in the story of Hertfordshire Zoo, and Temuko and Tamara have been especially important in that journey. Over the years, they have helped educate and inspire generations of keepers, contributing greatly to our knowledge of tapir care and animal husbandry. Their presence will be deeply missed by staff and visitors alike.

While this is a bittersweet moment, we are pleased to share that Temuko and Tamara are moving to a fantastic zoo where they will continue to receive excellent care. Our team will remain in close contact with their new keepers as they settle into their new home.

This move does not mark the end of tapirs at Hertfordshire Zoo. In the future, we look forward to welcoming a new female tapir, allowing us to continue supporting important conservation and breeding programmes.

We would like to thank everyone who supports Hertfordshire Zoo, whether through adoptions, visits, memberships, or simply by sharing our conservation message. Your continued support helps us care for the animals in our care, invest in their future, and play an active role in vital conservation and breeding programmes.

Temuko and Tamara will always hold a very special place in the Hertfordshire Zoo story, and we are grateful to everyone who has been part of their journey.
