Hertfordshire Zoo is pleased to announce the birth of five tiny meerkat pups. The pups, born on Friday, March 7th, are healthy and thriving under the care of their parents Brie and Stilton.
Zoo staff are observing the pups closely as they develop. At birth each weighed around 30 grams (about the weight of a digestive biscuit). Meerkats typically open their eyes after two weeks and begin consuming solid food at three weeks. The pups will begin venturing outside their den at approximately four weeks of age.
Meerkats are social animals that live in family groups, and the new pups are integrating well into the existing mob. These diurnal mammals are active during the day and can often be seen sunbathing in their enclosure.
“We are delighted with the arrival of the pups and are watching them closely as they grow,” said Tyler Whitnall, Director at Hertfordshire Zoo. “Brie and Stilton are attentive parents, and the pups are already showing off their adorable personalities. We can’t wait for visitors to see them!”
Meerkats are currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a stable population in their native Kalahari Desert habitat. Hertfordshire Zoo is committed to educating visitors about these fascinating animals.
