It is with a mix of heavy hearts and hopeful spirits that we announce the next chapter in the lives of our cherished white lioness sisters, Izulu and Zuri. These incredible animals have been a source of wonder and joy at Hertfordshire Zoo, and now they are embarking on a new adventure at our sister charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. This decision represents a significant step in our conservation mission, as we dedicate our efforts to species that need our help the most.
For us at Hertfordshire Zoo, lions hold a special place in our history—a legacy that began with the unforgettable Bobby, the lion who inspired our journey into wildlife conservation. Over the years, this legacy flourished, culminating in the arrival of Moto, our beloved “King of the Zoo,” in 2011. His majestic roar echoed across the countryside, captivating visitors near and far. Joining Moto were Kya and her daughter Izulu, followed two years later by the arrival of Zuri, the playful heart of the pride.
Izulu and Zuri have been more than just residents at the zoo; they’ve been family. Their lively personalities and unbreakable bond made them iconic figures, from Izulu’s regal demeanor to Zuri’s cheeky antics, like turning CCTV cameras into toys or re-landscaping their habitat in her unique style. These sisters have brought countless smiles and unforgettable moments to visitors of all ages.
In 2019, the pride moved into their bespoke habitat, Lion Pride Lands. Designed with their well-being in mind, it featured heated flooring, panoramic viewing areas, and their own Pride Rock—a space that allowed them to thrive while connecting with our guests. However, as much as we’ve loved caring for them, white lions remain incredibly rare in the wild, with only 1 in 10,000 lions born with this striking coloration. Their rarity, however, comes with a smaller gene pool, which can lead to health challenges over time.
Understanding the bigger picture, we’ve made the difficult yet necessary decision to refocus our resources on species most in need of conservation action. Izulu and Zuri’s move to The Big Cat Sanctuary ensures they will receive the specialised care and attention they deserve, while also continuing to inspire conservation efforts.
The Big Cat Sanctuary has a proud reputation for its exceptional work in big cat welfare and conservation. We know Izulu and Zuri will be in the best hands as they settle into their new home. This transition is not just an end; it’s a continuation of the incredible story these lions represent—a story of hope, adaptability, and the unyielding commitment to wildlife conservation.
We invite you to follow Izulu and Zuri’s journey as they begin this exciting new chapter. By following us on social media.
