Eco-Friendly Pumpkin Disposal

What to do with you carved pumpkins? Here are some pointers on what you can do!

As the Halloween season comes to an end, many of us are left with a common question: what to do with our carved pumpkins. At Hertfordshire Zoo, we’re committed to promoting sustainable practices that benefit both our local wildlife and the environment. This year, we’re taking a cue from Forestry England and advising against the common but harmful practice of leaving pumpkins in the woods.

Here at Hertfordshire Zoo we offer some fantastic alternatives for your post-Halloween pumpkins that are fun, eco-friendly, and can even benefit the animals!

Creative Uses for Your Leftover Pumpkins at Home:
  • Cook Up Some Pumpkin Soup: Utilise the insides of your pumpkin to whip up a delicious, warming soup. This is a perfect way to minimise waste while enjoying a seasonal treat.
  • Compost Your Pumpkin: Add your pumpkin scraps to a compost bin. Pumpkins, which are 90% water, are excellent for composting, enriching the soil with nitrogen and moisture.
  • Pumpkin Skincare Magic: Harness the anti-aging benefits of vitamins A, C, and E found in pumpkins with a DIY face mask for rejuvenating fall skin..
  • Make a Wildlife-Friendly Bird Feeder: Convert your pumpkin into a bird feeder by filling it with seeds and hanging it in your garden. This can be a delightful, temporary addition to help feed the birds during the colder months.

Remember, the best way to dispose of your pumpkin responsibly is by turning it into something beneficial for your home, garden, or local wildlife. Visit us at Hertfordshire Zoo to discover more about our conservation efforts and how you can get involved in making a positive impact on the environment.
