Discover the Dwarf Mongoose

25 January 2025

Hertfordshire Zoo is delighted to introduce its newest animal residents—dwarf mongooses!

These fascinating creatures have taken up residence alongside our porcupines, creating a must-visit mixed-species habitat. If you’re searching for a top family-friendly day out in Hertfordshire, don’t miss the chance to learn about these unique and charismatic animals.

Native Habitat:

Dwarf mongooses thrive in wooded savannas and open woodlands, with their range stretching across Africa from East Africa to southern central Africa.

 Diet:

Known as Africa’s smallest carnivore, the dwarf mongoose has an impressively varied diet. They primarily feast on beetles, scorpions, eggs, small rodents, and birds, but they’re not picky—they’ll even snack on fruits and berries when available. Visit Hertfordshire Zoo to see these incredible animals in action as they forage, hunt, and explore their habitat.

Family Life of the Dwarf Mongoose

Dwarf mongooses are highly social animals, living in organized groups of up to 30 individuals. These groups follow a fascinating hierarchy, with females holding dominance over males. Watch their group dynamics unfold in their new home at Hertfordshire Zoo, where they share the space with our lively porcupines.

How Do Dwarf Mongooses Survive in the Wild?

Despite their small size, dwarf mongooses face numerous predators in the wild, including grey mongooses, birds of prey, snakes, marabou storks, jackals, and monitor lizards. Yet, these resilient creatures can live up to 18 years, a testament to their adaptability and clever survival tactics.

Conservation and Awareness at Hertfordshire Zoo

The dwarf mongoose is classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List, meaning their populations are stable in the wild. At Hertfordshire Zoo, we’re committed to raising awareness of species like the dwarf mongoose, highlighting the importance of conserving their natural habitats while providing an educational and engaging experience for our visitors.
