Celebrating Peter Sampson’s 85th Birthday: A Legacy of Wildlife Conservation

Today, we are thrilled to wish a very Happy 85th Birthday to Peter Sampson, the visionary founder of Hertfordshire Zoo and its sister charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary!

Peter’s passion and dedication have touched countless lives over the years, from the majestic animals he has helped protect to the people he has inspired. His tireless efforts have transformed Hertfordshire Zoo into a internationally known sanctuary, and at 85, Peter continues to come to work every day, bringing his trademark energy and positivity. Whether it’s Bobby the lion or Rocky the tiger, Peter’s influence on animal conservation is felt far and wide.

Peter’s Journey: From Speedway to Wildlife Conservation

Peter’s journey began in 1984 when he and his family purchased the old Broxbourne Zoo, which would later become Paradise Wildlife Park and now Hertfordshire Zoo. Reflecting on that time, Peter recalls, “We bought Broxbourne Zoo on April 1, 1984, and everyone thought we were fools! We had no experience with wild animals and had never even seen a tiger before. But with strong business acumen, hard work, and passion, we built Paradise into what it is today.”

In 2001, Peter expanded his efforts by purchasing Marley Farm in Smarden, Kent, which has since become The Big Cat Sanctuary, home to over 35 big cats. Both Hertfordshire Zoo and The Big Cat Sanctuary play a vital role in the European Endangered Species Breeding Programmes, supporting the conservation of animals like lions, tigers, and snow leopards.

Peter’s legacy extends beyond his work with wildlife. Having lived and worked in Hertfordshire for over 55 years, Peter’s career began as a speedway rider, racing for various teams across the UK, including Rye House. His entrepreneurial spirit has seen him own and manage several businesses, all rooted in Hertfordshire, but his true passion has always been animal conservation.

Looking Toward the Future

Today, Hertfordshire Zoo is home to over 800 animals, and The Big Cat Sanctuary continues to grow as a centre for big cat conservation. Peter’s impact on animal welfare and conservation will continue to inspire future generations.

Join us in celebrating Peter Sampson’s remarkable journey and wish him a Happy 85th Birthday! Here’s to many more years of passion, dedication, and wildlife conservation!
