Hertfordshire Zoo Welcomes Baby Capybara!

Sat 22nd June

A new Capybara pup has been born

Hertfordshire Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of a new Capybara pup, born to proud parents, Coroline and Mani.

In the early morning hours of 2nd of June, our CCTV cameras captured the remarkable birth of the pup, overseen by mother Coroline. Remarkably, the pup was up and exploring within the first 30 minutes of birth, demonstrating robust health and vitality.

James Cork, our head keeper, expressed his delight: “It’s truly wonderful to have a Capybara pup at our zoo. Coroline has proven to be an exceptional mother.”

Capybaras, the largest rodents on Earth, are native to South America and are often found in dense vegetation. Known for their unique body shape and endearing facial features, they play a crucial role in the ecosystem and act as ambassadors for their species. By showcasing these animals, we aim to educate visitors on the importance of preserving their natural habitats in South America.

The pup is quickly gaining confidence and has been spotted exploring its habitat under the watchful eyes of Coroline. We anticipate it will soon be zooming around its habitat and enjoying swims in the large pool.
