At Hertfordshire Zoo, you can feed a red panda by booking the Meet the Red Pandas experience. This 30-minute encounter begins with welcome drinks at Zoo HQ before a keeper takes you into the red panda habitat, where you’ll meet Ash, the zoo’s resident red panda. Under expert supervision, you’ll have the chance to hand-feed him while learning about his behaviour and the conservation work being done to protect the species. The experience costs from £99 for up to two people, with general admission tickets required separately. It is open to participants aged 8 and above, though children under 10 must be accompanied by a participating adult, and anyone under 14 must have an adult onsite with a valid zoo day ticket. To round off the session, you’ll also receive a certificate as a keepsake of your visit.
Red pandas are omnivores, but their diet is mostly made up of bamboo leaves and shoots, which form the bulk of what they eat. In the wild, they also feed on fruits, berries, acorns, blossoms, roots, insects, and occasionally small animals or bird eggs. At Hertfordshire Zoo, the resident red panda, Ash, is fed a carefully managed diet that reflects his natural eating habits. Alongside bamboo, he’s given specially prepared treats such as fruit and nutritious pellets, which help provide the vitamins and minerals he needs. These foods are often used during the Meet the Red Pandas experience, where visitors can hand-feed him and see his favourite snacks up close.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the habitat this experience is not wheelchair accessible.
