The Black and Rufous Sengi is a small mammal found in the forests of East Africa. Despite its name, it is not a shrew but is more closely related to elephants and aardvarks. This species is known for its long, flexible nose, reddish-brown body, and jet-black hindquarters, giving it a unique appearance. It is incredibly fast and agile, using carefully maintained forest paths to dash through dense undergrowth.

Why is it called an "elephant shrew"?

The name comes from its long, trunk-like nose, which resembles a miniature elephant trunk. It uses this to sniff out insects and other small prey.

How fast can a Black and Rufous Sengi move?

Very fast! These tiny mammals can reach speeds up to 28 km/h and use their own network of cleared pathways in the forest to escape predators.

How do Black and Rufous Sengis find their food?

They use their long, sensitive noses to sniff through leaf litter, detecting the scent of insects hiding beneath the surface.
