Health & Safety Coordinator (Part-Time, 24 hours a week)


Hertfordshire Zoo seeks a Health & Safety Coordinator to promote safety across the site. This part-time role ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, supports emergency planning, and leads initiatives to reduce risks for employees, visitors, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain health, safety, and environmental policies
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with UK standards
  • Monitor, audit, and report on safety practices; investigate incidents
  • Lead training and emergency response drills
  • Oversee safety procedures, including Safe Systems of Work and contractor safety
  • Manage environmental initiatives, including waste disposal and emissions
  • Conduct inspections and manage third-party testing of systems
  • Support health, safety, and environmental concerns in building maintenance

Skills & Experience:
Essential:

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Health & Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH)
  • Experience in a health & safety role
  • Strong knowledge of health & safety regulations, risk assessments, and accident investigation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of construction/maintenance and CDM 2015
  • Understanding of zoonotic disease and animal-related safety
  • First Aid trained or willingness to train

Multi-Skilled Tradesperson/General Builder Required


Would you like to apply your trade skills in a truly unique environment, surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful, endangered animals?

Hertfordshire Zoo seeks an experienced Multi-Skilled Tradesperson / General Builder to maintain and develop our facilities. This hands-on role covers new builds, refurbishments, repairs, and general site maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • General building work (bricklaying, plastering, roofing, groundwork)
  • Carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical repairs
  • Maintaining and improving enclosures, visitor areas, and staff facilities
  • Assisting with new builds, renovations, and installations
  • Diagnosing and resolving maintenance issues efficiently
  • Ensuring all work meets Health & Safety regulations

Requirements:

  • 3+ years’ experience in construction, general building, or multi-trade roles
  • Skilled in at least two of the following: carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, roofing, groundwork, plastering, or electrical work
  • Ability to read and interpret plans/drawings
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and a problem-solver
  • Full UK driving licence and own transport (site not accessible by public transport)
  • Right to Work in the UK

What You’ll Do:
As part of our Catering Team, you’ll work across our food outlets and our soft play facility, Tumble Jungle. Your key responsibilities will include:
• Preparing and serving food with a smile
• Providing top-notch customer service in our restaurant, food outlets, and soft play facility
• Accurately taking orders and operating tills, including handling card transactions
• Maintaining high cleanliness standards in all areas, including surfaces, kitchen equipment, and utensils
• Receiving deliveries and restocking as needed
