Freelance Architect, Structural Engineer and Quantity Surveyor Wanted

Hertfordshire Zoo is committed to long-term conservation and to creating exceptional, welfare-led environments for the 500+ animals in our care. As part of our ongoing site development, we are seeking experienced freelance professionals to support a range of enclosure, habitat and construction projects across the zoo.

Architect / Specialist Designer
We are looking for an experienced Architect or specialist Designer to support the design of animal enclosures, habitats and small-scale buildings. This role offers the opportunity to shape high-quality, welfare-focused spaces that balance animal needs, operational practicality and visitor experience. Projects may range from early concept design through to detailed technical drawings, working closely with animal care, horticulture, maintenance and leadership teams.

Quantity Surveyor
We are seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to support small to large-scale construction and enclosure projects across the site. Working closely with Operations, Maintenance and Leadership teams, this role will ensure projects are accurately costed, commercially robust and delivered within agreed budgets and timelines. Responsibilities include tender pricing, risk assessment, contract drafting and negotiation, and maintaining financial control throughout project delivery.

Structural Engineer (Freelance)
We are recruiting a skilled Structural Engineer to provide specialist input into the design and delivery of enclosure, habitat and building projects. This flexible freelance role involves producing structural calculations, strategies and technical documentation, supporting RIBA Stage 2–3 design development, and collaborating closely with architects, project leaders and internal teams to ensure designs are safe, efficient and practical for animals, staff and visitors.
