The event formed part of Girlguiding Anglia’s annual programme, bringing togetherRainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, young leaders and leaders from across the region. The takeover offered not only a day filled with laughter, excitement, and friendship, but also a meaningful opportunity to connect with wildlife and explore important conservation themes.
Throughout the day, Girlguiding Anglia members took part in a wide range of activities, from interactive talks and keeper encounters to a popular stamp trail that encouraged exploration around the zoo. Highlights included riding the Rex Express train ride, hands-on conservation learning, examining 3D-printed animal skulls and exclusive insights into the behaviour and protection of endangered species. Every participant proudly earned the exclusive Hertfordshire Zoo takeover day badge, completing challenges that celebrated curiosity, teamwork, and a commitment to conservation. The colourful badge serves as a lasting reminder of their shared achievements and experiences.
Adding to the occasion, Hertfordshire Zoo CEO, Lynn Whitnall, proudly wore her own Girlguiding uniform from over 50 years ago, a symbolic gesture that celebrated the organisation’s history and its ongoing mission to empower young people. “We were delighted to welcome Girlguiding Anglia to the Zoo,” said a spokesperson for Hertfordshire Zoo. “Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring, and it was a pleasure to see so many young people engaging with wildlife and conservation. We look forward to hopefully welcoming them back in the future.”
For both organisations, the day highlighted a shared commitment to encouraging young people to explore, learn, and grow while developing a lifelong respect for the natural world. As thousands of Girlguiding members proudly left the zoo with their new badges, smiles, and memories, the takeover day marked a milestone in their guiding journey and a moment of pride for Hertfordshire Zoo.”Interested in booking out Hertfordshire Zoo for your private event?
