Cassie Jones Nominated for BIAZA Woman of the Year 2025!

Hertfordshire Zoo is thrilled to announce that our very own Cassie Jones has been nominated for the prestigious BIAZA Woman of the Year 2025 award!

Cassie serves as the Deputy Section Head of Large Carnivores and has been an integral part of Hertfordshire Zoo for the past 12 years. Her extensive career in animal care has also taken her to Battersea Park Children’s Zoo and Chessington World of Adventures, where she gained invaluable experience in both animal husbandry and leadership skills.

A Dedication to Big Cat Welfare

Cassie’s passion for animal welfare shines through in her work with Hertfordshire Zoo’s Amur Tigers, where she serves as their Primary Trainer. Her dedication has led to significant advancements in their care, including:

  • Training them to voluntarily present for injections
  • Teaching open-mouth cues for dental checks
  • Overseeing their transition into the state-of-the-art ‘Tiger Territory’ habitat, which opened in 2021

Her tireless efforts ensure that these incredible animals receive the best possible welfare, setting new standards in zoo-based animal care.

Leading Research & Conservation Efforts

Beyond her primary role, Cassie is deeply committed to scientific research and conservation. As the Lead Research Officer at Hertfordshire Zoo, she mentors students, oversees research projects, and contributes to new studies that enhance our understanding of the animals in our care.

She also plays a key role in conservation both within the zoo and beyond:

  • In-House Conservation Committee Member – helping to shape conservation initiatives at Hertfordshire Zoo
  • BIAZA Native Species Working Group Liaison – contributing to national conservation efforts
  • EEP Species Committee Member for the Snow Leopard – playing an active role in the management of this incredible species across Europe

Conservation Beyond the Zoo

Cassie’s dedication to wildlife conservation extends beyond her work hours. She volunteers with several organisations, including:

  • Bat Conservation Trust – aiding in bat protection and rehabilitation
  • Herts and Middlesex Badger Group – serving as an on-call responder
  • Local RSPB Reserve – assisting in managing cattle livestock during the grazing season

A True Role Model

Cassie’s impact is felt not only through her work with animals but also through her leadership and mentorship. Her nominators highlighted her unwavering support for her team, stating:

“Cassie is extremely supportive of her team members and always makes them feel valued in their thoughts and ideas on animal husbandry and welfare, regardless of the length of service. She is an excellent role model for anybody wanting to have a future career in the Zoo Industry.”

Her nomination for BIAZA Woman of the Year 2025 is a testament to her passion, expertise, and dedication to animal welfare and conservation. Congratulations, Cassie – we are so proud of you!
