Silent flyers – bird display

Barn Owl


Barn Owls are a medium sized owl with pale coloured feathers. They have white feathers covering their face and body with a mixture of brown and beige feathers on their wings. Barn owls also have dark eyes and a hooked shaped beak.
The barn owl tends to fly slowly and glide rather than flapping their wings. This flying style helps the Barn own to fly silently.

Rock Eagle owl


Rock Eagle-Owls are a large owl with a mixture of brown and beige speckled feathers covering their wings and chest. They have a pale white face with orange eyes. The eagle-owl also has dark ear tufts which stick up on top of their head.
The Rock Eagle-Owl tends to fly slowly with long bouts of gliding rather than flapping their wings. This flying style helps the Rock Eagle-Owl to fly silently.

Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl (Milky Owl)


The Verreaux’s Eagle owl is a large owl with mostly grey, brown and white feathers. The feathers on their chest and neck have a mottled patten on them. On their face, their feathers are mostly white with dark feathers around the edges. The Verreaux’s eagle-owl has pink eyelids which sit above their dark coloured eyes.
The Verreaux’s eagle-owl has large wings and flies with strong wing beats.

Burrowing Owl


The Burrowing owl is a small owl with long legs! They have mostly brown and white speckled feathers, which cover their whole body. They eyes of the Burrowing owl are yellow.
Burrowing Owls fly with irregular wing beats and frequent long glides. This owl may also hover when flying.

Whilst these birds are not included in our Silent Flight display, they may also make some noise throughout!

 

Black Hornbill


The Black Hornbill is a medium sized bird covered in black feathers. Both male and females Black Hornbills have a casque which sits on top of their beak. The males have a yellow casque and the females have black.

Striated Caracara


The Striated Caracara is a medium sized bird which is covered in mainly dark feathers. They do however have speckled feathers covering their head and chest, which are slightly lighter in colour.

Laughing Kookaburra


The laughing kookaburra is a small bird with light coloured feathers on their head and chest. The wings of the laughing kookaburra are slightly darker with a mottled pattern. They have a distinctive dark stripe which runs around each eye and a large, rounded beak.
